Tokyo-7OPEN CALL FOR APPLICATION—CINEMOVEMENT LAB VII TOKYO
* Application deadline for Singaporeans and Singapore Permanent Resident is extended to 5 August 2024, 23:59 (GMT+8)
In collaboration with Image Forum (Japan), Cinemovement Lab VII will take place from 15 - 22 December 2024 in Tokyo, Japan. Through screenings, lectures, cultural experiences, and free-wheeling discussions, participants will collaborate and develop boundary-breaking works-in-progress that will be showcased to the public at the end of the Lab.
What is the Cinemovement Lab?
Designed to ferment creative collisions and collusions between artists, dancers, filmmakers, and other cultural practitioners, the Cinemovement Laboratory is an incubation programme for interdisciplinary collaborations across the expanded fields of performance and media.
Over the course of an intensive week-long residential workshop, participants will engage each other in a series of artistic and technical experimentations that draws from a diverse slate of discursive and experiential programmes, to discuss and propose innovative projects that defy genre conventions and inhabit multiple ecosystems of circulation. The Lab is grounded in the belief that the unpredictability of encountering the unfamiliar within a compressed time-space is fertile ground for volatile, alchemical reactions with both tangible and intangible results.
Tangibly, previous Lab editions held in the cities of Hanoi, Hong Kong, Macau, Taipei, Zambales, and Solo, have led to the creation of works that have been selected and won awards at international platforms and festivals including the Lincoln Center (New York), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Busan International Film Festival, Singapore International Film Festival, Le FIFA (Montreal), Aesthetica (York), Cinedans (Amsterdam), and more.
Intangibly, we believe that the real achievement of the Lab is in community-building: through conversations and convivial experiments that may plant the seed of collaboration which may germinate across time.
With the Lab as a starting point and not the ending point, Cinemovement will provide post-production and distribution support for selected projects developed during the Lab which are particularly mature or innovative. For ideas that were seeded but did not find a definite form during the Lab, Cinemovement also provides an application-based opportunity for Lab alumni to apply to a residency platform that will take these ideas through the stages of development, production, and distribution.
In the long term, the Laboratory aims to create a sustainable network of interdisciplinary practitioners who can continue to collaborate and support each other's artistic endeavours beyond the duration of the programme. By breaking their usual routines and exposing them to unique interventions, the Lab provides a temporary yet impactful period of creative disruption that may aid artists in finding new ways to approach and challenge their artistic careers, leading to sustained personal and professional growth.
